1. Fund raising for local NPO
Many non-profit organizations rely on funding from sponsors and donors to stay afloat and accomplish their mission. One of my ideas for this project is to help a non-profit company write letters to business owners and individuals for direct mailing. Aside from fund raising letters, I could write press releases or aid in any office-related information that the client would like in print, including training manuals, memos, and form letters. The work for the client would vary depending on the overall aim of the company, but I like the idea of helping out a non-profit that needs a volunteer.
2. Organizing and writing a training manual for a restaurant
During school vacations, I am a server at a restaurant in Cincinnati, my hometown. I think the restaurant could really benefit from an informative and concise training guide for new hires. While certain company policies are universal, other tasks and expectations are unique to an employee's actual "job" in the restaurant. Etiquette for servers is different than that for cooks, a bartender has different responsibilities than a hostess. A lot of information is learned on the job, but a reference guide would be useful so that everyone can be on the same page. Also, I think it would help the owners and managers to have a solid document that they can refer to when an employee fails to do his or her job correctly.
3. Technical writing for AAMCO owners
AAMCO is a car repair company that specializes in transmissions. Friends of my family own 3 locations in the Cincinnati area, and I know they could use help in expanding their business. Although a good portion of the company's business comes from people who see the sign and come in from the street, the owners also rely on other car repair businesses referring clients with transmission problems to AAMCO. This would require a marketing plan to research local businesses as well as write up form letters that make it sound desireable to refer clients. I know they have taken steps in this direction, but a more organized and polished approach couldn't hurt.
